USD/JPY on TradingView: Spot vs Yen Futures

USD/JPY is the main dollar–yen pair. There’s a catch on TradingView: the CME yen futures (6J1!) are quoted the other way round, so their chart moves opposite to USDJPY. Here’s what each symbol shows.

Why the 6J chart is upside down

USD/JPY is quoted as yen per dollar (around 150 means $1 buys about ¥150). CME’s 6J futures are quoted as dollars per yen, a small number like 0.0066. One is roughly 1 divided by the other, so when USD/JPY rises (the dollar strengthens), 6J falls. If you trade USD/JPY but watch 6J, flip it mentally or use TradingView’s Invert scale (Alt + I).

On USD/JPY, one pip is 0.01. On a standard lot of $100,000 that’s ¥1,000 per pip, about $6.67 when USD/JPY is at 150.

Why don’t these prices match?

What does “1!” mean on TradingView?

A ticker ending in 1! is TradingView’s continuous contract: it always shows the front futures month and switches when it rolls over. 2! is the next month after that. Each contract has a different price, so the chart can jump at the roll.

Trading hours

Spot forex trades from 5:00 pm New York time on Sunday to 5:00 pm on Friday. CME currency futures trade almost the same hours with a one-hour daily break from 4:00 to 5:00 pm Central Time. See the live forex market hours clock for the sessions in your time zone.

Which one should you use?

For spot trading, FX:USDJPY, OANDA:USDJPY or your broker’s feed. For futures, 6J1!, remembering it moves the opposite way.

Work out pip value and position size with the pip calculator and position size calculator, or tick values with the futures calculator.
