How stock profit is calculated

Profit = (Sell price − Buy price) × Shares − Commissions
Return % = Profit ÷ (Buy price × Shares + Buy commission) × 100

Example: buy 100 shares at $50 and sell at $57.50. Profit = 7.50 × 100 = $750, a 15% return. With $5 commission each way it’s $740, or 14.79%.

Break-even price

The break-even price is what you need to sell at to cover the purchase and both commissions: (Buy price × Shares + commissions) ÷ Shares. With zero commissions it equals your buy price.

Short selling

Choose Short sell to calculate a short trade: you sell first and buy back later, so you profit when the price falls. Borrow fees and dividends you owe while short aren’t included.

FAQ

How do I calculate profit on a stock?
Subtract the buy price from the sell price, multiply by the number of shares, then subtract any commissions. 100 shares bought at $50 and sold at $57.50 is a $750 profit before costs.
How do I calculate return on a stock?
Divide the profit by the total amount you paid (shares times buy price, plus the buy commission) and multiply by 100.
What is the break-even price of a stock trade?
The price at which the sale exactly covers what you paid plus commissions on both sides: (buy price × shares + commissions) ÷ shares.
Does this include taxes and dividends?
No. It shows the trading profit before tax. Dividends received, borrow fees on shorts and taxes aren't included.
