Tips for choosing chart colours
- Start with the background. Everything else flows from it — pick the canvas first, then choose candles that contrast cleanly against it.
- Keep it to three or four colours. Background, up, down and one accent is plenty. Too many colours make a chart harder, not easier, to read.
- Test in your real lighting. A scheme that looks great at noon can be harsh at midnight. Trade-test it before committing.
- Soften the defaults. Pure red and green are tiring over hours. A deeper red and a calmer green reduce eye strain without losing meaning.
- Don't rely on colour alone. If you're colour-blind, use brightness to signal direction (light up, dark down) and vary line styles for indicators.
- Save it as a template so you can apply the same look across every chart and device in one click.
FAQ
How do I change candle colours in TradingView?
Open the chart settings, go to the Symbol tab and set the body, border and wick colours for up and down candles, then use the Canvas tab to set the background and grid lines.
What are the best chart colours for dark mode?
A dark navy or near-black background with soft mint and rose, or softened green and red candles, keeps contrast high while reducing eye strain. See the Midnight Cyan and Classic Soft schemes.
Are there colour-blind-friendly TradingView colours?
Yes. Use a monochrome scheme where direction is shown by brightness, with light up candles and dark down candles, instead of relying on red and green. See the Mono Contrast scheme.
Can I save my colour scheme in TradingView?
Yes. After setting your colours, right-click the chart, choose Color Theme and Save, then apply that template to any chart in one click.
Do I need an account or to pay for these colours?
No. Every hex code here is free to copy, and the ChartWatch palette generator is free to use with no sign-up.
