COMEX gold futures
Gold futures trade on CME Globex almost 24 hours a day, from 6:00 pm New York time on Sunday to 5:00 pm on Friday, stopping for one hour each afternoon from 5:00 to 6:00 pm ET. CME’s reference time zone is Chicago, so these are also listed as 5:00 pm to 4:00 pm Central Time. The live clock above converts them to your time zone, including when US daylight saving starts or ends.
On US holidays CME usually runs shortened sessions rather than closing completely. See the CME holiday schedule.
Spot gold (XAU/USD)
Spot gold isn’t traded on one exchange; it’s an over-the-counter market centred on London. Brokers that offer XAU/USD set their own hours, which typically run from Sunday evening to Friday evening New York time with a short daily break that roughly matches the futures break. Check your broker’s contract specifications for exact times.
The busiest hours
Gold is usually most active when London and New York overlap, roughly 8:00 am to 12:00 pm New York time, and around major US data such as CPI and jobs reports and Fed decisions. See the forex session clock for session overlaps.
