Calculate return on investment: enter what you invested and what you got back (or what it’s worth now). Add the holding period to see the annualised ROI, so investments held for different lengths of time can be compared.
ROI = (Amount returned − Total cost) ÷ Total cost × 100 Annualised ROI = (Amount returned ÷ Total cost)^(1 ÷ Years) − 1
Example: invest $5,000 and get back $6,500. Net profit is $1,500, so ROI is 30%. If that took 2 years, the annualised ROI is 14.02% a year, not 15%, because returns compound.
A 30% return over 2 years and a 20% return over 6 months aren’t comparable as raw numbers. Annualising converts both into a yearly rate: 14.02% vs 44% a year. Very short holding periods produce huge annualised numbers, so treat those with care.
Fees, commissions and other costs reduce your real return. Put them in the extra costs box so they’re added to the amount invested. Taxes aren’t included.
For a share trade specifically, the stock profit calculator handles shares, prices and commissions on both sides. For a crypto trade, use the crypto profit calculator.
